(Four plaques contain the dedication, a quote from Columbus, a list of contributors and background information on Columbia, South Carolina. Names of twenty-three Revolutionary War heroes from South Carolina are engraved on the bricks) Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Full-length figure of Christopher Columbus stands on rectangular base. He holds an ornate cross in his proper right hand and his proper left hand is outstretched, palm up. He wears a calf-length coat with decorative wrist and sleeve bands and a large wool-like collar. He wears slippers, a skirt and a decorative shirt. The figure faces the City of Columbia.

Remarks:
Erected for the Quincentennial of the Discovery of America. Columbia, South Carolina is reportedly the first American city to be named for Columbus. Sculpture project was initiated by the South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution with funding from corporate, private and in-kind donations. Richtex, a Columbia brick manufacturer, built the base. Lynwood R. Burkholder was the model. The artist is a Regent of the South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution. IAS files include texts of the plaques, diagrams and plans for the plaza and photocopied images of the work in progress.
