Remarks:
The sculpture is a memorial to veterans of all U.S. wars and was purchased for $1,000. It was a gift of James B. Titman, a Civil War veteran, county landowner, merchant, farmer and horse breeder. IAS files contain an excerpt from "The Soldier's Monument in Sparta" by Mary Elinor Eppler, which suggests the sculpture was fabricated by the Friedley-Voshardt Company, and provides an illustration of the sculpture from around 1900. IAS files also contain a related article from The New Jersey Herald, Aug. 28, 1987, pg. 1.
