Remarks:
Sculpture is a copy of a statue by Corneille Theunissen that stands in front of the headquarters building of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. It was presented to the United States Military Academy by the Ecole Polytechnique in recognition of the long-standing friendship between the two schools and in appreciation of United States participation in World War I. Sculpture was stored indoors from 1966 to 1974, when it was reinstalled 50 yards southeast of its original location. IAS files contain a copy of the HABS/HAER National Park Service inventory which includes related material from the West Point Archives. Because the sculpture had a gilded finish for many years, it was known by USMA cadets as "Gold Tooth."
