Description:
Christopher Columbus, dressed in a thigh-length garment draped with a cape, stands with his proper left foot forward on a rock. He holds the top of an anchor with his proper left hand, the bottom of which rests on the ground beside his proper left foot. In his proper right hand is a scroll. The sculpture is mounted atop a tiered base with a stepped bottom that is surrounded by several inlaid plaques and enclosed by a fence.

Remarks:
The sculpture cost $10,000. The Columbus Day Committee of Atlantic City purchased the sculpture from an Italian firm with funds contributed by approximately 400 area citizens of Italian America origin. The firm, Foundries and Quarry of Art, located in Naples, Italy, headed by Gennaro Chiurazzi, produced the sculpture with the artist. Small inlaid plaque at foot of base reads: IN MEMORY OF/SALVATORE T. CONSALVO JR./1927-1969/"his heart only knew love"/GENERAL CHAIRMAN/COLUMBUS DAY COMMITTEE/1965-1969. IAS files contain partial transcription of large plaque at foot of base. IAS files contain related articles from the Atlantic City Press, June 30, 1957, Oct. 8, 1958 and Oct. 13, 1958 (from Atlantic City Free Public Library, vertical historical file under "Monuments").
