Pierce established a foundation to monitor and study the effects of inventions such as his which changed indoor environmental conditions. The foundation had two divisions, one in Raritan, New Jersey, where the statue was originally located, until that operation was discontinued in the 1950s; and the other located in New Haven. The exact date of the figure is unknown. It was commissioned for Raritan after Pierce's death, ca. 1917.
