    Description:
The sculpture depicts the Delphic oracle receiving prophecy from a fissure in the earth. An elongated female figure is seated on a three-legged stool which rests on a rough patch of ground. Her head is bowed toward her proper right shoulder and her proper left arm is raised with the palm open. Her proper right hand grasps the corner of the stool. Her proper right foot rests against the leg of the stool and her proper left foot dangles in front of the stool. Neither foot touches the ground beneath the stool. The sculpture rests on a base with sloping sides surrounded with loose stones.

    Remarks:
The 1967 "Portentous" developed from a series of six small bronze studies titled "Aspects of the Oracle" which the artist created while working in her residency at Radcliffe's Bunting Institute from 1962-1964. The sculpture was given by the artist and her mother, Marianna A. Packard, as a memorial to Constance Smith, a friend and first dean of Radcliffe's Bunting Institute. IAS files contain an article from Radcliffe's Art Spectrum, April 1992. Although the SOS! survey was completed in 1994, a note was added that the sculpture was cleaned in July 1996.
