Remarks:
This statue is a tribute to the first Christian Grand Duke of Lithuania, who united Lithuania and Poland by marrying the Queen of Poland. The monument refers specifically to the Battle of Grunwald, July 15, 1410. Ostrowski modeled this monument in 1908-1909 as an entry in a competition for a monument in Cracow. It was not selected, but thirty years later it was chosen for the entrance to the Polish Pavilion at the 1939-1940 World's Fair in New York. Aymar Embury created the base for the work. The statue was a gift of the King Jagiello Monument Committee. The 1987 conservation of the sculpture was funded by the Adopt-A-Monument Program and a final report prepared in 1989 is on file with the Department of Parks and Recreation.
