Remarks:
Flewelling designed the fountain; Gage was responsible for the sculpture. The figure on the shaft represents an Indian rain prayer. SOS! survey reports sculpture is of stone; application for National Register of Historic Places indicates sculpture is of cast concrete. When the fountain began its operation in 1931, its water jets and color effects were timed to give 60 different combinations every 8 minutes. Cost of the fountain was $22,000 including $8,000 for electric equipment and wiring. IAS files contain copy of related application for determination of eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places. IAS files contain copy of related excerpt from "Los Angeles: a Guide to the City and its Environs", 2nd ed., New York: Hastings House, 1951, pg. 204.
The inscription on a plaque on a wall behind the fountain reads: This ground was purchased and developed/into a park by the property owners of Beverly Hills north of Santa Monica/Boulevard who have donated it to the city, all under the sponsorship of/The Beverly Hills residential/Protective Association/(names)/Dedicated A.D. 1931/For this fountain/Ralph C.
