Remarks:
Erected to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the school, the sculpture was funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council as administered by the DeCordova Museum, Westford Academy Art Club, Westford Academy Trustees, and the Westford Arts Lottery. The idea for the sculpture began in 1990, when the DeCordova Museum initiated a "sculptor in residence" program. Visiting artist Ralph Helmick led the Westford High School students through a six-week process, with this sculpture being selected from the dozens of designs created. Tetrev and Stanton were the students who submitted the winning design. Fletcher Quarry cut the granite blocks and oversaw the sandblasting. Alfred Garside assisted as a granite consultant.
