    Owner:
City of Salinas, John Steinbeck Library, 110 West San Luis Street, Salinas, California 93901
    Remarks:
The sculpture was executed as part of the artist's Masters project and a series of creative Americans. He loaned it the Library in 1971. In 1973, the sculpture was purchased by the Soroptimist Club for $3,500 and given to the City for the Library. Kaiser Refractory donated the stone for the base, which was built and installed by the City. The sculpture is often the object of pranks played by high school students who use the library. Attached articles list the dedication date alternately as Feb. 27, 1974 and April 28, 1974. John Steinbeck was an American novelist and native of Salinas. IAS files contain related articles from the Salinas Californian, Dec. 31, 1971 and the Monterey Peninsula Herald, Nov. 26, 1973.
