    Provenance:
Formerly located Riverside Park, New London, Connecticut
    Remarks:
The sculpture cost $2,250 and was a gift of Sebastian D. Lawrence, president of National Whaling Bank. The figure of the fireman is modeled on Frederick L. Allen, foreman and founder of the Naumeag Engine Company (1850), civic leader (city mayor 1866-1871), state representative and senator. The order for the memorial was placed with Orlando R. Smith, owner of Smith Granite Company. The cutter of the figure was A. Malnati. The pedestal and base were cut by John Surber, Thomas Holiday, Peter Jeffrey, Albert Williams, and John Gavitt. The letters were cut by Joseph Fraser for the polished die of William Fitzgerald. IAS files contain unpublished manuscript by Rita and Robert Manke, "Mr. Lawrence's Fireman's Monument," Oct. 30, 1984, which includes additional bibliographic citations.
The sculpture was originally erected at head of State Street in front of New London County Courthouse on Huntington Street. It was moved to Riverside Park in August of 1914 because of traffic conditions. While at Riverside Park, the sculpture was vandalized. The helmet and tip of the hose nozzle had to be replaced; the nose, face and clothes repaired. The inscription text was broken and instead of being replaced, was inscribed on the pedestal. In September 1976, the sculpture was moved to its current site and a new pedestal created.
