Description:
Seated portrait of Rosa Parks wearing the same clothes she wore on December 1, 1955, the day she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat for a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. She is seen seated on a rocky ledge, her body turned slightly to the right, gaze directed toward the viewer, legs crossed at the ankles, hands folded in her lap, and a small purse held in her left hand. She wears a long coat and a small round hat, and a pair of glasses.

Remarks:
The statue of Rosa Parks was authorized by Congress in 2005, and is the first commission of a full-sized statue approved and funded by Congress since 1873. The statue is also the first full-length statue of an African American person in the U.S. Capitol. The statue was commissioned in November 2009 following a national competition managed by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Architect of the Capitol.
