    Description: 
    A standing portrait of Christopher Columbus dressed in a short robe and cloak. He holds a compass in his proper right hand and a scrolled map in his proper left hand. A cross hangs from a chain around his neck. He stands on a rectangular granite base engraved with an image of the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Below the engraving of the three ships is a relief portrait of Esther Fusaro, wife of Worcester attorney Nunziato Fusaro, the donor of the sculpture. An anchor is engraved at each end of the base. The sculpture is encircled by a sidewalk lined with eighteen benches.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was a gift of Worcester attorney Nunziato Fusaro as a memorial to his wife Esther who died in 1973. The memorial also honors the Italian-American community in Worcester. IAS files contain a copy of the City of Worcester Parks and Recreation Department / Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C "Monuments" questionnaire dated April 1, 1986; the Supplement for Form C "Monuments" questionnaire which includes a condition assessment; a list of the donors of each bench surrounding the sculpture; and a Sept. 1986 Dennis and Craine Associates condition assessment.
