    Description: 
    A bronze relief plaque depicting the U.S.S. Monitor at sea. The boat is seen broadside with the stern to the left and the bow to the right. The gun turret is in the center and an American flag flies at the stern. In the background behind the Monitor to the left of the turret is the Merrimac. The plaque is mounted on a rough granite base.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was erected by the town of Nashua for the cost of $320.00. The sculpture was installed at the sight of the former Nashua Iron & Steel Company where the port stoppers for the Monitor were forged. The correction tag "The Virginia" on the information plaque is incorrectly placed below the word "Monitor". IAS files contain copies of related John G. Foster Post 7 G.A.R. correspondence. IAS files contain copy of related excerpt from City of Nashua 1931 Annual Report, pg. 76-77; and copies of related articles from Nashua Telegraph, May 29 and June 1, 1931.
