Description:
A fireman, clothed in a 1910 uniform, stands holding a young child in his proper left arm and a kerosene lantern in his proper right hand. The child is dressed in a nightgown. The sculpture is painted gold. There is a wire connection and electric light bulb in the lantern held by the fireman. The sculpture is mounted upon a Victorian-style, rectangular base topped by a cornice with an underside trimmed in relief. The base has curving sides with beveled edges decorated in relief. On one side, a fire helmet, hook and ladder are depicted in relief. At one time, the base served as a drinking fountain. A flowing cup, used for drinking, remains on each side of the base, although water no longer flows. The base is painted black and the decorative relief trim, relief depictions, and fountain cups are painted gold.

The sculpture cost $487.19. Funds for the sculpture were collected from the citizens of the city of Ottawa and Putnam County. The sculpture is dedicated to Ottawa volunteer firemen and remembers two firemen in particular, John Krieger and Joseph Hermiller, Jr., who lost their lives on January 6, 1911, while fighting a fire in Ottawa. The sculpture was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1915, and was the first memorial installed in Ohio honoring volunteer firemen.
