Behind the armor are two United States shields and behind the shields are four symbols of Roman military force. On the right is a torch and a battle axe and on the left is a Roman standard and a fasces. Draped spears extend from the sides of the shields partially obscuring a cannon and cannon balls at the base of the pediment. In the right corner there are oak leaves which symbolize strength and in the left corner there are laurel leaves which were used by the Greeks to crown their victors.
