    Remarks: 
    The pergola was created as part of city improvements for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909. It functioned as a shelter for trolley passengers as well as the entrance to an underground public comfort station. The pergola was restored in 1973. Bronze plaque mounted on front of Pioneer Building in Pioneer Square reads: PIONEER BUILDING/PERGOLA AND TOTEM POLE/HAS BEEN DESIGNATED A/NATIONAL/HISTORIC LANDMARK/THIS SITE POSSESSES NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE/IN COMMEMORATING THE HISTORY OF THE/UNITED STATES OF AMERICA/1977/NATIONAL PARK SERVICE/UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.
