    Remarks: 
    Robert Smalls (1839-1915) was born an enslaved African American in Beaufort and later became a Civil War hero, a state Senator and a U.S. Congressman. IAS files include an excerpt from "South Carolina's Blacks and Native Americans," a publication of the State's Human Affairs Commission, Dr. Marianna W. Davis, Chairperson, 1976. For additional information see "The Life and Legacy of Robert Smalls" by Lu Ann Jones and Robert Kent Sutton (National Park Service, 2012). IAS files also include text of nearby commemorative plaque.
