    Remarks:
The memorial was erected to honor Syracuse Fire Chief Philip Eckel who lost his life on June 1, 1886. The memorial was originally located at the corner of Salina, Butternut, and State Streets (1900). In 1959, it was moved to Ashland Park at the corner of Salina and Pearl Streets for I-81 construction. In 1979, it was again relocated, this time to Fayette Park (now Fayette-Syracuse Fire Fighters Memorial Park), as part of a larger tribute to fireman. The monument height was reduced in 1979 by removal of two base plinth stones. At that time, too, a bronze plaque was added to the south side of the pedestal.
