    Description: 
    Mounted atop a square base is a standing figure of a Civil War soldier dressed in his uniform. He holds the barrel of his rifle at chest level with both hands, the stock resting by his proper right foot. The soldier has a moustache and wears a cap. The short cape of his coat is pushed back over his proper right shoulder. The tiers of the base alternate between polished Barre granite and polished Canton marble. The lower base is encircled by shrubbery.

    Remarks: 
    The monument commemorates Civil War soldiers. It was erected by public subscription through a monument committee, with fund raising beginning in the winter of 1897-1898. The monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25, 1898. IAS files contain an article from the Commercial Advertiser, May 25, 1898; and an article from the Commercial Advertiser, identified only as June, 1898, discussing the dedication.
