    Description: 
    Standing portrait of Johan Printz as he takes his first step on Pennsylvania soil. He is dressed in knee breeches and a thigh-length jacket. In his proper left arm he holds the twenty-eight articles of government from Queen Christina describing how he should rule the small settlement of Swedes who lived on the site now known as Governor Printz Park.

    Remarks: 
    This sculpture was commissioned by the Swedish Colonial Society of Philadelphia to honor the first European settlement founded in 1643 in Tinicum. Johan Printz was governor of New Sweden in Tinicum from 1643 to 1653. The sculpture was funded by Gustav Nyselius, an early member of the Swedish Colonial Society. Edward English was responsible for incising the lettering. IAS files contain a pamphlet on the monument. IAS files also contain several related articles possibly from the Delaware County Times (Pennsylvania), April 8, 1972 and April 10, 1972 which describe the dedication. Additional information on the piece is available at the Delaware County Historical Society in Broomall, Pennsylvania.
