Formerly administered by City of University City, Office of the Mayor, 6801 Delmar, University City, Missouri 63130
Formerly located Delmar at Trinity, University City, Missouri
    Remarks:
Erected by Edward G. Lewis, the lions formerly were mounted atop pylons flanking the entrance to University City. Cost: $50,000. Two sculpture students from the old Washington University Art School in downtown St. Louis assisted the artist with the modeling. Eastman Plastic Relief made the molds of the lions. Thomas C. Young of Eames & Young architectural firm designed the pylons. Severe deterioration of the lions caused the City of University City to give the lions to the Missouri Historical Society. Fiberglass replacements now stand at the original outdoor location (see IAS MO000257). IAS files contain copies of newspaper articles from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Sept. 26, 1974; St. Louis Globe Democrat, Nov. 26, 1976; and the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Dec. 12, 1976, all of which discuss repairs needed. IAS files also contain copy from St. Louis Rehabber (Feb. 1983), which details the creation of the lions.
