    Remarks:
    Title supplied by Inventory cataloger.
Commissioned by University of Alabama coach Paul W. Bryant as the first free-standing sculpture on the Tuscaloosa campus. The fragment was originally part of a fountain which stood at the Paul W. Bryant Hall dormitory. The fountain was about fourteen feet high and consisted of six semi-nude male figures supporting the two basins for the fountain. It was illuminated with red and white lights and designed and constructed by Frank Engle, then an art instructor on campus, and Tom Early, a local landscape architect. The nudity of the figures caused some controversy at the time of the fountain's installation. Deemed to be hazardous, in 1987, the sculpture was moved and the fountain was dismantled and moved to a maintenance facility. Much of the sculpture was then destroyed, reportedly because it would have been too costly to repair. One head fragment was given to the Paul W. Bryant Museum. IAS files include related articles from the Crimson White, the campus newspaper, Oct. 24, 1966, Oct. 31, 1966 and July 29, 1987, a 1990 unpublished essay and photocopies of the fountain in its original form and site.
