    Remarks:
In March 1866, the town voted to raise $650 for the installation of a monument to those who had lost their lives during the Civil War. Later it was decided to make the monument a fountain bearing the names of fallen Ashfield soldiers. Originally, the fountain was installed on the corner of Main and Norton Hill Road, but when a new Civil War monument (IAS record MA000280) was placed in Plain Cemetery by Samuel Williams in 1917, the decision was made to move the fountain to Center Cemetery. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire.
