Located Wisconsin Avenue & Highway 61, Grand Marais, Minnesota
    Provenance:
Formerly located Lake Superior Trading Post, Minnesota winter 1973-1974.
    Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by the Cook County Historical Society. During the winter of 1973-1974, the sculpture was installed at the Lake Superior Trading Post. The original paddle broke when the sculpture was erected at the Lake Superior Trading Post. Subsequently, the paddle was stolen and a new paddle was carved by William Holeman in November 1974. Bernard Skoog and helpers constructed the base for the sculpture. IAS files contain a related article from the Cook County News-Herald (Grand Marais, MN), July 10, 1975, describing the dedication; and an article from the Cook County Historical Society publication, Update 16 (Spring 1993) which notes that the paddle is often missing from the sculpture. In May 1974, the sculpture was given eleven coats of New Life Wood Sealer which gave the sculpture a golden color.
