BUREAU BROS. PHILADELPHIA (Base rear:) ERECTED TO THE MEMORY/OF/SAMUEL S. COLLYER/WHO DIED JULY 27, 1884/WHILE IN THE DISCHARGE/OF HIS DUTY AS/CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE/PAWTUCKET/FIRE DEPARTMENT/BORN MAY 3, 1832. (Base front:) COLLYER Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Standing figure of a fire chief wearing a fire hat and a coat. His proper left foot is forward and his proper left arm is by his side. His proper right arm is forward, bent at the elbow and holding a megaphone. A bronze relief on the base depicts a horse-drawn fire team and hose cart overturned and several men on the ground, injured or in the background after the accident. Helmets and gear are strewn across the foreground.

Remarks:
Collyer, Chief Engineer for the Pawtucket Fire Department, died from injuries sustained when a fire engine overturned upon him enroute to an alarm. Incoming SOS! report indicates work has been nominated for National Register of Historic Places. Incoming report listed artist as C. Dowler, probably Charles Dowler.
