    Remarks:
The totem pole is reportedly the largest one in Missouri. It was created by members of the Bethel Colony Wood Carvers Club. Drawings for the totem pole were made by Dale Case. He, along with Tom Christine and Maggie Dooley, did most of the carving. They were assisted by George and Mary Arment, Arthur and Stella Douglass, Al and Connie Lowe, Roy and Maurine Parcell, Chester and Leona Calvert, Shelby and Doris VanZant, Velma Stokes and Phyllis Case. It took two years for the totem pole to be completed. Club members and other volunteers assisted in the installation of the totem pole. The animals included in the totem pole were chosen in part because they represent animals found in the region.
The totem pole was dedicated to Willie Keil. Willie Keil was the son of Bethel's founder, Dr. Keil. Willie Keil's funeral procession from Bethel to Willapa, Washington, in May to November 1855, made national news.
IAS files contain photocopies of historic photos of the totem pole taken before the fish was lost and the turkey was damaged. IAS files contain related clippings, including articles from the Shelby County Herald, June 23, 1982, pg. 3; and April 27, 1988, pg. 1.
