Formerly located In Intersection of 8th & Race Streets, Cincinnati, Ohio 1887-1915.
    Remarks:
Funded by public subscription. This monument was originally erected at 8th & Race Streets in the middle of the intersection. Because of traffic problems, it was moved in 1915 to the west end of Garfield Place on Elm Street, where it was placed on a shorter base. Both the old and the new base were made of granite. Piatt Park was formerly known as Garfield Place. When Piatt Park was renovated in 1988, the monument was moved to its present location. Bentley Meisner Associates were the landscape architects responsible for the design for the 1988 park renovation.
IAS files contain copies of articles from Cincinnati Post, May 10, 1978, which discusses the creation, 1915 relocation, and 1978 conservation treatment of the sculpture; Cincinnati Post, Dec. 23, 1985, which mentions the fundraising for the sculpture; and Artscape (Sept. 1991), which mentions the traffic problems leading to the 1915 relocation of the sculpture.
