DIBUSCHER (On base, front right;) WILKINS AND NEVILLE(On base, north side:) TO THE MEMORY OF THE/UNKNOWN DEAD/ ERECTED BY THE WOMEN'S RELIEF CORPS/AUXILIARY TO THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC (On base, south side:) "BUT THERE UPON THE SODDEN EARTH /HE BIDES HIS LAST LONG SLEEP,/ TO SLEEP UN-NAMED, UNKNOWN / UNTIL GOD'S ANGEL ON THE WHIRLWIND RIDES / TO CLAIM HIS OWN" signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
A marble figure of a Civil War soldier lying dead on a battlefield, his head resting on a pile of rocks entwined with vines and ferns. Beside are his rifle, cap, and canteen. The soldier reclines on a rectangular granite base carved in relief with two inscriptions framed by rosettes and laurel leaves on each end. The two short sides of the base are carved in relief with an image of an eagle, its wings spread and an American shield and a branch of laurel leaves in its talons.

Remarks:
The monument cost $1,550 and was erected by Women's Relief Corps in honor the unknown soldiers from Maryland who lost their lives during the Civil War. IAS files contain copies of articles from: Baltimore American, May 27, 1894; Nov. 24, 1895; Nov. 29, 1895; May 31, 1900; May 31, 1902; and May 31, 1918; and Baltimore Sun, Nov. 28, 1895; .
