    Description:
Massive square column constructed of marble, with three high bronze figures in front and eagle at top front edge of the monument. The eagle's head is pointed towards the proper right and its wings are outspread vertically. Below the eagle on the center front face of the monument is a shield with a bas-relief profile of an eagle. The eagle's wings are outspread and it carries a long ribbon in its beak. Attached to the front center of the monument, below the shield, is a bronze high relief figure grouping of a Union soldier flanked by two female figures. The soldier wears a uniform and cap and holds a rifle with his proper right hand; the butt of the gun rests on the ground beside his proper right foot. The soldier is flanked by two female figures wearing long gowns. They face the soldier. The figure on the proper left holds a shield. The figure on the proper right holds a palm frond. The three relief figures stand on tiered pedestals which jut out from the monument. The monument ends in a series of steps.

The monument was dedicated on the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Kennesaw. IAS files contain copy of excerpt from draft of "Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park: the Commemoration of American Battlefields and National Park Development, 1887-1942". The eagle on top of the sculpture was damaged in 1984 by lightning and was replaced in 1991.
