    Description: 
    A tall granite shaft with inscriptions, a bas-relief portrait of Guglielmo Marconi, and a relief of a torch. Along the top on all sides of the shaft is a relief frieze depicting wireless communication between different locations and means of transportation.

    IAS files contain a copy of Robert Freeman and Vivienne Lasky's, "Hidden Treasure: Public Sculpture in Providence," Providence, RI: Rhode Island Bicentennial Foundation, 1980, pg. 68, 69 and David Marshall's, "The Jewel of Providence: An Illustrated History of Roger Williams Park 1871-1961," Providence, RI: Providence Parks Department, 1987, pg. 32. This monument was erected by Providence's Italian-American community, through funds raised by popular subscription. Planning for the monument began following the Inventor's death in 1937, but work halted during World War II. Thousands attended the dedication cememony, including Mayor Dennis Roberts and Gov. John O. Pastore.
