(On front:) Vietnam Veterans Memorial/In honor of those men and women who served/our country during one of its most trying times (Front, proper right:) Hill 881 South/On April 30, 1967, one of the bloodiest Hill Battles of the Vietnam War took place at Hill 881 South. Over 50 United States Marines and over 300 North Vietnamese regulars lost their lives. This scene was taken from that battle, an incident vividly recalled by Austin Deuel, the artist. On January 3, 1986, John D. Baines commissioned Austin Deuel to sculpt "Hill 881 South" as a lasting tribute to all Vietnam combat veterans. Dedicated Sunday afternoon, November 9, 1986. (Proper left side: text of a poem entitled "Death at My Door" by David G. Rogers, 1st Lt, USMC) Phippen Bear Paw Bronze, Scottsdale, Az signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
A fallen Marine with his helmet lying nearby is assisted by a Marine radio operator who checks his pulse and looks up, searching the sky for a medevac helicopter. The scene is a bronze recreation of an illustration by Marine illustrator Austin Deuel in which radioman Donald Hassock assisted a fellow Marine during the Tet Offensive on April 30, 1967.
