Remarks:
The sculpture was originally installed in the dining room of the French luxury liner, the Normandie. The ship was destroyed by fire in the Hudson River in Feb. 1942 as it was being converted to a troop ship. The sculpture survived and it was acquired by the cemetery after being discovered dismantled in a Brooklyn churchyard. Ismar David designed the base and setting. IAS files contain the text of nearby associated plaques, a brochure from the cemetery, and excerpts from the books "Long Island: a Guide to New York's Suffolk and Nassau Counties," by Raymond Spinzia (New York: Hippocrene Books, 1991) and "Picture History of the Normandie," by Frank O. Braynard (New York: Dover Publications, 1987).
