Remarks:
Sir John Dill (1881-1944), a prominent British general of World War II, was promoted to field marshal when the United States entered the war in December 1941. At that time he was sent to Washington, D.C., where he served as the chief British representative on the combined British and American Chiefs of Staff until his death in November 1944. Dill was known for his involvement in war planning conferences in Washington, Casablanca, Quebec, Cairo, and Teheran; and in plans to form the United Nations. Dill was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal posthumously by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery through a special act of Congress. This sculpture was erected by Dill's American friends and associates. IAS files contain transcriptions of nearby plaques dedicated to Dill's service.
