Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Chauncey Mitchell Depew (1834-1928), a Peekskill native, who was a well-known orator and leader in the Republican Party. He was educated at Peekskill Military Academy and received his legal training in the William Nelson Law office. He served as Secretary of State of New York in 1864, was President of the New York Central Railroad from 1885 to 1898, and served as a United States Senator for twelve years from 1899 to 1911. In 1901, Depew deeded part of his land to the Village of Peekskill to be used as a public park that would be named after him, where the figure is located. Mitchell Lake, which the figure overlooks, also takes its name from Depew's middle name. The Millstone granite for the pedestal was quarried, at Depew's request, near Peekskill. The figure was cast by Roman Bronze Works and the pedestal was erected by DeChristoper Brothers. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Chester A.
