Inscription:  (Lower part of sculpture, on shape representing water, incised lettering:) Alan Collins 1974 signed Description:  A symbolic abstract sculpture with a large, center ribbon-like shape representing a DNA spiral, its two linked loops evoking the splitting and dividing of cells that take place in growth. Cantilevered outward and surrounding the bottom are four forms representing the four primitive elements of air, earth, fire, and water. The sculpture is painted white and mounted upon a circular base of stones inlaid in concrete, raised in the center. Engineering director for the project was William Davidson, dean of the College of Technology. He was assisted by Dave Swaine, an instructor in technology, and Gerald Herbrandson, a student. The sculpture was fabricated by Reginald Eighme of the AU Plant service. The sculpture is designed for people to sit on. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the South Bend Tribune, Sept. 5, 1975, and Dec. 7, 1975; articles from Focus, vol. 11, no. 2 (April-May 1975) and vol. 12, no. 1 (Jan.-Feb. 1976): pg. 9.
