Christo and Jeanne-Claude had been planning the project since 1979. It was only in 2003 that New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg signed a contract permitting the artists to realize the temporary work of art. The project was financed entirely by the artists. The Gates were installed by 600 workers. The saffron-colored fabric panels were unfurled in a ceremony with the artists on Feb. 12 and removal began on Feb. 28. IAS files contain newspaper clippings, press release, and fabric swatch.
