Remarks:
Gustavus Sniper was born in 1836 in Germany near Frieberg in Baden, and in 1839 he came to the U.S. with his parents who settled in Syracuse, New York. Sculptor Prof. R. F. Dallas executed the sketch model; Charles E. Colton was architect. Three swords have been stolen and replaced since 1930 and the bronze base plaque was stolen once in 1941. In 2003, the sculpture was cleaned and replacement sword, scabbard, spurs, and reins were fabricated.
