    Description: 
    A seated female figure representing the Mother of Illinois rests atop a tall limestone base with a bronze reliefs on the front and back. The female figure, a representation of the State of Illinois, wears a long dress, cape, and crown. Her proper left arm rests on a large closed book symbolizing the record of her sons' achievements. In her proper right hand is a sheathed sword. Set into the base is a bronze relief of a battle scene set in dense forest. Confederate soldiers are depicted on one side of the relief while Union soldiers are on the other. On the other side of the base are a state seal and two torches in bronze.

    Remarks: 
    Inscription on nearby marker reads: Illinois erects this monument to commemorate her sons who gave their services to perpetuate the honor and glory of the United States. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. Cost $18,810.26. Funded by State Government.
