Remarks:
IAS files contain additional citations for related articles and an excerpt from Graff, Nancy Price, ed., "Celebrating Vermont: Myths and Realities," Middlebury College, Middlebury VT 1991, which provide a detailed history of the mausoleum designed and erected by G. B. Croft and a crew of 125 workmen at a cost of $75,000. The figure of Bowman was designed by Giovanni Turini of New York and carved by professional stonecutters. Bowman (1816-1891) came to Shrewsburg and established a successful tannery. In 1851 he was erected to his State Legislature, but returned to his tannery business. He designed the mausoleum after his wife and two daughters died.
