Crawford, Annie I.,
Mythology -- Classical
Sculpture
Apollo, (painting).
Artist:
Crawford, Annie I., 1856-1942, sculptor.
Title:
Apollo, (painting).
Dates:
ca. 1873.
Subject:
Mythology -- Classical -- Apollo
Object Type:
Sculpture
Owner:
Anonymous Collection.
Remarks:
From the Buffalo Courier & Republic, Evening Edition (Buffalo, New York), Feb. 10, 1873, the article "The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, The Reunion at the Gallery - Pictures and Statuary" includes the following: "Miss Annie Crawford, a miss of thirteen and a pupil of Mr. Sellstedt's, is represented in the Gallery by two or three portraits and a bust of Apollo. She has given unmistakable signs of genius, and if life is spared her a brilliant career lies before her."
The bust of Apollo is probably a sculpture, however it may be the only sculpture by the artist. Her father John Crawford owned a Monument Works so she would have had access to the tools, methods and material to make a sculpture.
