Description:
An environmental sculpture representing the African-American experience. The piece consists of a rectangular plot of land covered with stones and bordered by railroad ties embedded in the ground, symbolizing the hard work and contributions to the infra-structure of America made by African-Americans. In the center of the plot are several railroad ties which appear to lean against each other, representing supportive families and communities. Attached to the top of the ties is a steel ball and chain symbolizing the period of slavery in America. Various plants are arranged around the plot, suggesting growth and fertility in African-American families.
