Formerly located Veteran's Park, Corner of Myrtle & Main Street, Liberty Hill, Texas
Remarks:
The sculpture was created as part of an International Sculpture Symposium, organized by local sculptor Mel Fowler to commemorate the United States Bicentennial. Twenty-three sculptors were invited to participate. The sculptures were originally installed at Veterans Park (Myrtle & Main Streets). Because they were subject to vandalism over the years, they were moved in 1987 to their current site at Liberty Hill High School. IAS files contain transcription of a nearby plaque which provides biography of Mel Fowler and gives history of the sculpture garden.
The female figure that originally was part of the sculpture was removed after vandals knocked it over, rendering it unstable. IAS files contain a newsclipping from The Independent, April 25, 1991, which shows the female figure in place opposite the male figure. Brass plaque on sidewalk in front of male figure reads: SHARON LEEBER/"LIBERTY COUPLE"/UNITED STATES The number "3" is stenciled in black in front of male figure's proper left foot.
IAS files also contain related article from The Independent dated July 11, 1991, pg. 9; a pamphlet "International Sculpture Garden," Liberty Hill, TX: Liberty Hill High School, n.d.; and excerpt from Bette Redman Reichman, ed., "Sculpture in Austin," Austin, TX: University of Texas at Austin, College of Fine Arts, 1989, pg. 17.
