Description:
Major Lemuel Purnell Montgomery, 1786-1814, stands in military uniform, his proper left foot bent and resting on a rectangular piece. He wears calf-length boots with spurs, a belt with a buckle with an eagle design on it, and a buttoned, high-collared jacket with epaulets. A sword is held by a scabbard attached to his proper left hip and his proper right arm comes across his chest and holds its handle. The proper left hand grabs the lower part of the scabbard. The figure is mounted upon square base with a plaque on its sloped front.

Remarks:
Figure was publicly commissioned. Major Montgomery was an officer in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and he was killed at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Tallapoosa County, Alabama in 1814. Montgomery County, Alabama, was named after Major Montgomery. Montgomery was also a lawyer. IAS files contain a related article from the Alabama Journal, May 26, 1987, pg. 1, 4.
