Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Milwaukee Chapter #48, 5555 West Good Hope Road, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53223
Provenance:
Formerly located Wonderlodge, East Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Formerly located Juneau Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Remarks:
Commissioned for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, the sculpture originally stood above an ornate fountain in Juneau Park. The sculpture and fountain were dedicated to the community on July 23, 1901. The sculpture is a replica of one done in Reading, Pennsylvania, by the Fish Manufacturing Company. In 1927, Elks Lodge no. 46 opened its "Wonderlodge" on East Wisconsin and the sculpture was relocated there. A new stone pedestal was designed and fabricated by lodge member, R.F. Clas. A rededication ceremony was held Nov. 22, 1927. In 1971, the Wonderlodge was razed. The sculpture was removed and subsequently relocated to its current site on Good Hope Road. The sculpture has been vandalized in the past. The elk's antlers were broken off and removed. A pair of real antlers were substituted. Sculpture was cleaned, painted and moved to present base prior to July 21, 1990, when it was rededicated.
