    Remarks:
The idea for the monument originated in 1985 with Freedom Birds, Inc., the Idaho falls area Vietnam veterans organization, who chose the site and oversaw the design for the monument. Tom Chriswell's design was selected by the memorial committee in 1986 and land was donated by the City of Idaho Falls. In 1987, the Idaho legislature approved a resolution recognizing the memorial to be the official Vietnam Veterans Memorial for the state. Land was donated by the City of Idaho Falls. State Lottery funds (approximately $200,000) were subsequently allocated to the monument. The entire cost of the monument was approximately $275,000; with state funds of $190,000 supplemented by private and corporate donations of money, labor and materials. The monument honors 243 Idahoans, either killed in the war, missing in action, or prisoners of war. Reportedly, this is the first Vietnam monument in the nation that recognizes women's participation in the war.
