Description:
A full-length, figure of a semi-nude woman kneeling on her proper right knee with her proper left knee raised. Her arms are raised above her head, with elbows slightly bent and her proper right palm placed against her proper left forearm. She is wearing a dress which reaches just below her knee. The figure is mounted on a boulder set on beach stones, before a landscaped arrangement of Maine cedar trees, shadbrush and rugosa roses.

Provenance:
Acquired 1987.
Remarks:
Donated in 1987 by Norma Marin and her late husband John Marin, Jr., in memory of his parents, Marie and John Marin. The sculpture was the second casting of a planned edition of six, and was inspired by the Maine's maritime and shipbuilding heritage. Base and surrounding plantings by Patrick Chasse. The granite base represents Washington and Hancock Counties in Maine, and the plantings are of indigenous plants. IAS files contain an article from the Bangor Daily News (Bangor, ME), Sept. 20, 1988, pg. 1, 8; University of Maine at Machias, "News Release No. 2," and dedication brochure. Nearby plaque reads: SPIRIT OF THE SEA/by William Zorach/Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John Marin, Jr./in Memory of Marie and John Marin.
