    Description:
Facade of science building features images from art history and mythology to illustrate the science of genetics. Four abstract geometric figures, the "G-nomes," stand on each corner of the roof. These represent the men and women of science. Each holds wands which represent X and Y chromosomes. Starting at their feet, a swirled double helix pattern runs down the sides of the building. Four bas-relief "Hybrids" are installed at the south entrance. Each relief depicts a figure comprised from parts of different creatures, such a sphinx with a woman's head, lion's body and wings. Each relief is surrounded by black and white checkered borders with the letters "A" "G" "C" and "T," the four amino acids common to all living things. "Warning-Biohazard" consists of a pair of black-gloved forearms protruding from the building. Black, red and white squares patterned around the arms contain jumbled letters which spell out a quote from Robert Sinsheimer, a molecular biologist, "Human beings are not yet wise enough to direct the course of evolution."

    Remarks:
Commissioned by Iowa State University under the Iowa Art in State Buildings Program for $30,000. The percent-for-art funded project was controversial, as some felt that it was critical of genetics research undertaken in the building. IAS files include related articles from the University Museums Newsletter, Fall, 1990, the Des Moines Register, the Iowa State Daily and the Daily Tribune. IAS files also contain a museum information sheet on the G-Nome Project, which includes descriptions of the building's interior mosaics, also designed by Leicester.
