Provenance:
Formerly located Elberton High School, 45 Forest Avenue, Elberton, Georgia 30635
Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Ursina Barbara Stahnke (1935-1953), Elberton's first German exchange student, and is popularly known as the "Ursina Memorial." She was sponsored by the Elberton Kiwanis Club and arrived in the summer of 1953 to complete her senior year. She was killed in a horseback riding accident shortly thereafter. The monument was designed by P. E. Galli of the Dixie Granite Company and fabricated by Dixie Blue Granite. The carving was done by Richard Cecchini of the Harmony Blue Granite Company.
At the time of the dedication, the school was known as Elberton High School (also known as White High School or Central High). IAS files contain a related article from The Elberton Star, March 20, 1954; and a pamphlet entitled "Elberton's Sweetheart, Ursina Stahnke," a project by the students of the School's 1984-1985 class of Nelson Hitchock. The pamphlet contains clippings on Ursina, including biographical and obituary information. The pamphlet also contain a reprint of an article about the sculpture from the Monument News-Review, May 1954. The sculpture was funded by the Elberton Kiwanians and friends of the Kiwanians Club.
