    Description:
A Civil War soldier with a beard and mustache, stands holding the barrel of a rifle with both hands in front of him. The butt of the rifle rests at his feet. He is dressed in a cap, a calf-length coat, and a cape. The sculpture is mounted atop a tall, obelisk-shaped base with a cap piece and a stepped bottom. Around the middle of the base, on each side, are sunken relief panels. On the front relief panel contains an eagle holding arrows in its claws, an inscription, and a pair of crossed, furled flags. Two crossed cannons are depicted on the rear relief panel. The right relief panel contains an anchor and two pyramidal piles of cannon balls. A pair of crossed swords in sheaths, an ammunition pouch and a gun holster are depicted on the left relief panel. At the foot of the base, a bronze commemorative plaque set in a natural boulder bears an inscription and a bust relief of Abraham Lincoln. The monument is surrounded by a fence.

    Remarks:
The monument honors Lake County, Ohio soldiers who died in the Civil War. The monument cost $4,200. A Lake County politician, Woodworth, initially donated $2,000 (paid in two installments in 1878 and 1880). The Lake County Monument Association raised the remaining funds. Several Lake County townships donated $579. The monument project took 12 years to complete. Within the base the Association placed a zinc box containing a complete roster of Lake County's Civil War soldiers, an 1880 lithograph of the monument, and contemporary information. Because July 4 fell on the Sabbath, the monument was dedicated on July 3, 1880 as part of the Independence Day celebration. Republican candidate for President of the United States, James A. Garfield, spoke at the dedication ceremony. Plaque at foot of base reads: ON FEBRUARY (...transcription illegible...) , 1861, PRESIDENT-ELECT/ABRAHAM LINCOLN/PAUSED IN PAINESVILLE (...transcription illegible...)/LAKE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY - FEBRUARY 21, 1972. IAS files contain a clipping from the Painesville Telegraph, May 27, 1880, pg. 3; and a copy of a historic 1880 lithograph of the monument from The Lake County Historical Society Quarterly (June 1980): pg. 4-5.
